Today in class we took down 2 pages of notes. It included types of designers like Graphic Designers, Web Designers, Fashion Designers.

Elements of design:
  • Shape
  • Line - define shapes, contours etc.
  • Space - Between objects
  • Texture - Surface, look & feel
  • Colour
  • Value - Range of lightness & darkness within a picture.
Principles Of Design:

  • Contrast - Difference between two related elements
  • Emphasis - Focus on a particular area or point
  • Balance - Distribution of the elements across a design
  • Unity - All elements compliment each other. Achieved in layout
  • Pattern - Give a design unity, emphasis and continuity
  • Movement - Actual movement or the illusion of movement
  • Rhythm - Provides continuity & variety in design
We had a task to do on design in which we had to: Choose one of your favourite objects and;

  1. Write about what it looks like & sketch its appearance including all details of its design.
  2. Write about its functions, draw a diagram to show how the object works.
The object I chose was my iPod Nano. I drew a picture of my iPod and showed its features. I also wrote about these functions in a detailed manner.

Today in class we handed up our assignment that was issued on 10/10/2011. The title of this assignment was a Storyboard For Video Promo. The Assessment Requirements are to: produce a storyboard outlining scenes for a video clip introducing a new washing powder to the market. It has to:

    • Capture attention
    • Control the eyes movement across the screen or page
    • Convey information
    • Evoke emotion
I think that my assignment had all of the above.
We also watched the rest of the videos from last Thursday 17/11/2011 and compared who's was the best. The best video won a prize.

We looked at http://www.baddesigns.com/ where we read bad design features on products and how they can be improved. The website has numerous sub-headings. An example of one of these sub-headings is; Things that don't work the way you expect. Then it gives you a list of items that are designed insufficiently. For me these items are self explanatory. For example, one of these items is How do you open the toothpaste? The picture opposite is the picture that displays this title. It goes on to explain that a male could not open his toothpaste because it was sealed and he had nothing to pop the seal. Now to me every toothpaste sold in a grocery, pharmacy etc. is the exact same as this one. Every toothpaste I have bought you have to pop the seal with the opposite end of the lid which provides a little spike that opens the toothpaste which is an obvious attribute for opening a sealed toothpaste. The website offers many of these human interaction problems but for me its a pointless website that offers nothing to the reader.

    My Finished Video.

Today in class, I designed a video to my favourite song full of pictures that I researched on the internet. I chose my favourite song from YouTube, downloaded it off http://www.youtube-mp3.org/ and uploaded pictures from Google Images to be perfectly timed with the words of the song. I used Windows Live Movie Maker to produce this video. The pictures expressed the words on the song in there own individual way. Instead of having words to express the video, pictures were used and only pictures. Also pictures of the artist were forbidden. My finished video is above.
